Our work in Tanzania
The Soap Making Tanzania Project - organised by ICUC University of Southampton to Improve the Livelihoods of Indigenous Communities through the Production & Marketing of Agricultural and Forest Produce.

Melinda Coss - (working with Dr. Peter Degroot) - Terms of Reference.

1) To provide technical and practical assistance to scale up manufacturing procedures to enable the production of 30,000 soap bars.

2) To work with staff to ensure good manufacturing procedures.

3) To train staff in health and safety and quality control procedures to meet UK requirements.

4) To develop an outline draft Business Plan and Marketing presentations.

5) To finalise presentations for catalogues specialising in fairly traded and environmentally and socially sustainably produced products, and look at packaging options.

6) To look at product development, to include allied soap products, and investigate the potential for African oils and butters in cosmetic creams and lotions.

7) To procure samples from local producers for potential distributors in the UK who have expressed an interest in community produced fairly traded natural products to facilitate additional volume sales.


8) To investigate the possibility of more formally organising women producer groups, possibly using the model of the nearby award-winning co-operative project.

9) To produce samples of three more varieties of soaps using different ingredients for presentation to the UK market.
